Review Review Review!

8/27/13



Today in class we went over different concepts in chemistry such as:
Octet Rule





Electron Dot Diagrams




And Molecular Formation



We were also given a short written quiz on Chemistry we learned last year and an Oral on objectives 2-8.
We also reached a deeper understanding of the new grading system.

Milk in Motion

 
In Class on 8/23/13:
 In response to video that we watched for homework, students were told to come up with a question. This is what my group came up with: What does the dish soap do that the food coloring does not when it is in contact with milk?
Then my group came up with an experiment to help answer our initial question.
Procedure:
  1. Pour 15 ml of  each type of milk in four different dishes(types of milk: skim, soy, whole, 2%)
  2. Add one drop of food coloring to each dish
  3. Dip a toothpick into dish soap
  4. Dip toothpick into milk
  5. Observe
  6. Repeat steps 1 - 5

Conclusion:

As a class, each student said one word related to the experiment and put it on the board. Then we described how each of those words are tied to one another.(Pictured above)
Answer to question:
Milk contains fat that has a non-polar charge, while the dish soap has a polar charge. The different charges combined with different densities causes bonds to break and molecules to move around. Stuck in the middle of this reaction is the food coloring which is what allows for us to see the reaction happen.
